Position Summary Information

Position Responsibilities

We seek creative, collaborative faculty dedicated to excellent teaching and scholarly activity in the fields of American Sign Language (ASL), Interpreting, Social Justice, and Communication Equity. The School of Humanities, Arts and Sciences invites applicants for a full-time, rolling contract, ranked faculty position with the American Sign Language & Interpreting Department beginning in Fall 2018, pending budget approval. Rank and salary commensurate with education and experience. The ASL & Interpreting department welcomes, teaches and mentors a diverse student population. Candidates with demonstrated success in efforts related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are encouraged to apply.

The ASL & Interpreting department of St. Catherine University (St. Kate’s) is proud of its 34 year history of contributions and continued commitment to ASL and interpreter education. The department includes six full-time and ten adjunct faculty, two lab assistants and a Program Coordinator/Interpreter. St. Kate’s has been awarded funding from the U. S. Department of Education (RSA) since 1999 serving as a regional center for interpreter education and member of the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers. In 2016, St. Kate’s was awarded two awards with national focus, the first a $4,000,000 award to create an Experiential Learning Model Demonstration Center and Consortium, and the second $2,000,000 to create the Behavioral Health Interpreting Project in collaboration with ADARA and the Alabama State Department of Mental Health. St. Kate’s has a national reputation and is known for its innovative programming and faculty research and scholarly work in ethics and decision making, Deaf Interpreting, and evidence based ASL and interpreting teaching practices. St. Catherine University hosted the first conference on Deaf Interpreting during the summer of 2015, bringing over 200 Deaf interpreters from around the country to campus. St. Kate’s values and enjoys partnerships with vibrant Deaf and interpreting communities, where activism and community involvement is highly valued.

Responsibilities:
Teach 2-3 graduate and 3-4 ASL and/or interpreting undergraduate courses per year (total of 6 courses per year); participate in graduate program review; advise students; curriculum revision for courses taught; scholarly presentations and publications and department/university service.

Position Qualifications

Qualifications:
A Master of Arts with completed doctoral coursework in in interpreting, linguistics, deaf studies, education, ASL, or an appropriately related field and certification (ASLTA or ASLTA in progress and/or RID) is required. Earned Doctoral degree is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate: (a) experience working with students from diverse cultures, (b) proven leadership ability, and © evidence of research and scholarship in the field.
